A broken white line with a white arrow to the left or right indicates your lane is ending, or about to merge with another lane.

Broken white line with a white arrow to the left or right

When you see a broken white line with an arrow pointing left or right, it means the lane you’re in is ending and you will need to merge into the adjacent lane in the direction of the arrow. The arrow shows the next move you must make, so you should prepare to merge safely—signal early, check mirrors and blind spots, and slip into the gap in traffic smoothly.

A plain broken white line means you may change lanes when it’s safe, but it doesn’t indicate an ending lane. A center line marks the separation between opposing directions, and a yellow center line marks two-way traffic with passing rules. The arrowed marking specifically signals that your lane ends and a merge is required.
